Waterfall Fountains

You can easily obtain these benefits by spending a small amount of money to install a wall fountain or barrel fountain indoors or go all out and install an elaborate multi-tiered waterfall in an outside garden area. Either choice will provide a pleasing effect and either choice will also require a little effort to maintain your fountain and allow it to operate at maximum efficiency. Since these units are usually self-contained and operate using a static water supply, routine maintenance is vital to insure that you receive the benefits that your investment pays for.

If you have a small fountain unit, such as a wall fountain, barrel fountain, or small waterfall, it is advisable to periodically change the water in your fountain. This will allow the water to remain fresh and not become dirty or cloudy as impurities from its surroundings will naturally land in the water. If at any time you shut the unit down and will not be operating it for any length of time, it is advisable to remove all the water from the unit and give it a good cleaning to prevent any foul odors that may occur due to any residual, stagnant water. If you unit is located outside, a regular skimming to remove leaves, twigs or other debris will keep your waterfall fountain operating freshly and efficiently.

Larger waterfall fountains will be more difficult to drain of all the water, therefore, some people choose to periodically add treatments to the water to maintain its cleanliness and prevent any unwanted growth of microorganisms. If you are intending to use any kind of chemical treatments in the water, be sure to check with the pump manufacturer to be sure the chemicals will not damage your pump in any way. As with the smaller units, routine skimming to remove any unwanted debris will keep the unit clean and prevent any foreign materials from entering the pump or clogging the pump filter.

Regardless of the size or type of the water feature you own, it is advisable to keep a periodic check on the water level and to replenish it as necessary. The natural effects of splashing and evaporation will take its toll over time and the last thing you want to occur is for the pump to run dry and suffer the effects of cavitation due to too low a water level. The pump will also need to be removed occasionally to clean any screens or filters that are part of its protection system. It is also a good idea to periodically back flush the pump to remove any impurities that may accumulate on the interior workings of this most important part of your water feature.

Finally, if you live in an area of the country where freezing temperatures are the norm during the winter months, it is advisable that you remove and drain the pump to prevent it from freezing and bursting in the cold weather. If your unit is small enough, the best thing to do is to drain the entire unit of water and store it in an area inside and away from the freezing weather. Mostly, the care and maintenance of waterfall fountains and other water features are just like the care of anything that utilizes water, keeping it clean and preventing it from freezing will ensure it operates safely and efficiently for many years to come.
